In 1972, when the Club of Rome published its gloomy projections on the use of planet Earth's natural energy reserves in The Limits to Growth, many frowned.

Producers, operators, consumers and governments knew their own brevity and mortality, but for the first time in human history they saw the finiteness of the world around them. Discussions flared up and many opinions and reports saw the light of day, urging a more sensible and, above all, more economical use of available energy resources. But did it help?
